How MOBILISE shaped Deborah’s path in sustainable agriculture

Reflecting on her experience, Deborah Dinsa describes how the MOBILISE project supported her transition from student to young professional. Originally from Ethiopia, she recently graduated from Hawassa University with a degree in Agribusiness and Value Chain Management. During her studies, she developed a strong interest in sustainable agriculture and its role in improving local livelihoods, an interest that continues to guide her career.

Today, Deborah works as a Junior Rural Development Advisor in the Climate Change Cluster of an international organization based in Addis Ababa. Her work focuses on projects that promote sustainable land management, soil health, and improved agricultural practices. “I support the implementation of project activities aimed at enhancing rural livelihoods and promoting sustainable agriculture,” she explains. “I also assist in the development of MSMEs to contribute to rural economic growth.”

Deborah credits the MOBILISE project for helping her take this important first step in her career. “The experience I gained in climate-smart agriculture, starting from the pre-departure training, equipped me with essential skills and knowledge that I now use every day,” she says. The international exposure she received during her internship in the Netherlands gave her firsthand experience in the floriculture sector, deepening her understanding of sustainable agricultural practices in a global context.

The skills Deborah developed through MOBILISE continue to support her in her current role. “I frequently use the presentation and reporting skills I practiced during the project,” she notes. “The pre-departure training also provided a solid foundation in climate-smart agriculture, which aligns closely with the work I do now.”

Her internship abroad was also a valuable learning experience. “It was my first time working in a professional environment,” she recalls. “I learned important professional values and work ethics that have stayed with me.”

Looking ahead, Deborah hopes to build on her experience and eventually start her own business in the agricultural sector. “My ambition is to continue gaining valuable experience that will prepare me to contribute to sustainable development in my own way,” she says.

Her message to future MOBILISE participants is clear: “Connect the knowledge and skills you gain during the training and internshipsto the specific challenges faced in your own country. By doing so, you canapply what you’ve learned effectively in your local communities.”

Deborah’s story shows how international learningopportunities like MOBILISE can help young professionals grow, gain practicalskills, and make a meaningful contribution in their home countries.
